The Marvel Cinematic Universe is gigantic. Ever since 2008’s Iron Man, we have seen wars, mystic arts, drug dealers, and not-your-average thugs in space protecting the galaxy. 2008 was just the beginning of something greater, and it was the start of Phase I but could Marvel be drifting away from these “phases”? Kevin Feige has this to say:
“We’ve been lucky that [contract expirations] haven’t factored in too much. We’ve had people under contract for certain films, then we’ve had new ideas and new directions like Civil War like we wanted to do, and we’ve been lucky enough to make new contracts. Or Spider-Man: Homecoming, the cast has been awesome in their enthusiasm for the direction and the story lines that we’ve been telling. So it really does, right now, all start with where we wanna take the stories. Certainly as we get to Infinity War there is a sense of a climax, if not a conclusion to, by the time we’re at untitled Avengers 4, the 22 movies that will have encompassed the first three phases of the MCU. And what happens after that will be very different. I don’t know if it’s Phase 4, it might be a new thing.”
Where he intrigues me are the last two sentences. “And what happens after that will be very different. I don’t know if it’s Phase 4, it might be a new thing”. 22 movies is a terrific accomplishment PLUS several TV shows* on live television or on streaming networks (Netflix and Hulu soon).
I will always call them phases because that is what they are to me. I expect so many movies then an Avengers-type movie. I do think I understand, at least how I read this quote, why Feige would reconsider the phases. Phase “34” sounds like Marvel has been around forever doing the same old thing for years upon years. I think it would be a better thing if they do change things up. We will have to wait and see what happens after May 3, 2019 with the untitled Avengers 4 release.
